One million people 11 miles from volcano about to erupt
Saturday, May 13, 2006, 11 miles outside Yogyakarta, Indonesia, city of approximately one million on the central island of Java. Mt Merapi is about to erupt big, the Associate Press says. (AP Photo/Ed Wray). Wish them well.
One thousand years ago exactly in 1006, an eruption by Merapi seems to have destroyed the nation that built the monumental Borobudur complex.
Apparently it's more of a lava spewer than a cap blowing, ash billower, which gives me hope the destruction won't reach anywhere near "Jogja" (the big city's local nickname), and that would explain why the headlines scream only thousands flee (i.e. as opposed to "hundreds of thousands flee").
